For your information, the XBee radios, which are normally made by Digi are shipped with firmware implementing the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol, however it can be loaded with the ZigBee protocol stack, where it can be downloaded from the Digi Website.

The XBee chip is specially designed so it can be mounted in specific sockets. Also, please take note that these sockets don’t fit in a standard breadboard, so you don’t need to waste your time to test it! Therefore, you need to solder wires directly to the socket and placing them in a breadboard! By the way, the XBee requires a 3.3 Voltage regulator to each breadboard for powering the XBee Radios.  Hope you all will enjoy building XBee radios…
